A Pew for Billy Collins by Pasor Jason Farley

While no longer smoking cigarettes,
but still listening to be-bop jazz
through oversized headphones,
I bounce down the street
being cool in 4/4 time.

I think about the things that happened
back in history
in Jerusalem.

Not the crusades
or anything depressing.

Just things like Jesus
walking on water
with fish shouting to the soles of his sandals
as they bobbed in and out of view.
"Hallelujah," they said,
rolling in the aisles.
Pentecostals with gills.

Or the time he said, “Throw
your net on the other side,”
and 153 gyrating fish
flopped into the disciple's net.

Jesus sure rubbed shoulders with a lot of fish
for a fisher of men.
